Our strategies for ensuring continuous safe water access are:

  • Community engagement: Signing Preventive Maintenance Continuous Rehabilitation Agreements (PMCRA) with communities committing to contribute towards the costs for the maintenance of water sources.
  • Preventive maintenance of handpumps: checking the functionality of water sources (boreholes) and repairing or replacing broken parts.
  • Capacity building: Enhancing the skills of community-level handpump mechanics through hands-on training.
  • Women’s participation: Gender-focused training of water and sanitation committees to include women in leadership positions and increase opportunities to improve their income.

Improved handwashing stations

  • Solar-powered piped water systems: Upgrading handpumps to solar-powered piped water systems.
  • Automated water billing: Introducing prepaid automatic dispensers for the collection of water source maintenance fees.
  • Quality assurance: Regular water quality testing and treatment to guarantee safety for users.
  • Handwashing stations: Marketing of portable, multi-tap handwashing stations for households and institutions to promote good hygiene.
  • Policy advocacy: Working with local and national governments to incorporate water sources management and climate change adaptaion into national rural water resources management guidelines.
