TeamUp Uganda hands over four youth-friendly corners to Mityana district

On September 24th 2025, TeamUp Uganda handed over four newly renovated youth-friendly corners to Mityana District Local Government, marking a significant milestone in improving access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for young people. The spaces are intended to ensure that youth can receive confidential, non-judgmental, and professional care within their local health facilities. The facilities are located at Malangala, Bulera, Mpongo, and Kalangaalo Health Centres. The handover ceremony took place at Malangala Health Centre.

The handover was officiated by Sarah Kintu, Chief Executive Officer of Action 4 Health Uganda (A4HU), TeamUp Uganda’s implementing partner in the health sector. She handed over the facilities to the district leadership represented by Dr. Vincent Kawooya, the District Health Officer (DHO) for Mityana.

In her remarks, Sarah Kintu emphasized that creating safe and youth-friendly spaces within health facilities is urgent to ensure that young people access sexual and reproductive health information and services without fear, stigma, or judgment.
“Every young person deserves a safe space where they can seek accurate information and professional care. These youth-friendly corners are not just rooms; they are gateways to better health, empowerment, and hope for our youth,” she said.

Receiving the facilities, Dr. Kawooya commended TeamUp Uganda and its partners for supporting the district to improve youth health outcomes. He shared that since the establishment of the youth-friendly corners, there has been a sharp increase in both male and female youth seeking professional healthcare services across Mityana District.
By December 2024, TeamUp-trained community SRH educators had linked more than 12,000 young people to professional health care services, indicating that young people are increasingly embracing good health-seeking behavior when services are accessible, friendly, and inclusive.

The four youth-friendly corners have been renovated and equipped to provide confidential, youth-centered services, counseling, and SRH education. They also serve as hubs where trained peer educators and health workers engage young people in discussions about reproductive health, life skills, and positive lifestyle choices.
Speaking at the event, Monica Basemera, Head of the TeamUp Program Coordination Unit, highlighted the value of TeamUp Uganda’s cross-sector approach that integrates interventions in agriculture, water, and health to empower young people holistically.

“By combining efforts in agriculture, water, and health, we are empowering youth to thrive economically, socially, and physically. This cross-sector model ensures that young people are not only healthy, but also resilient and productive members of their communities,” said Basemera.

TeamUp Uganda is a youth-focused development program implemented by A4HU, Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung and Whave Solutions intiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and managed as well as co-financed through three foundations, Deutsche StiftungWeltbevölkerung (DSW), Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) and Siemens Stiftung. The current phase which started in September 2022 directly targets 9,024 youth aged 15-30 years in Mityana and Kassanda districts by April 2026.
